(responses)

windspike- nice analogy, that. of course, theoretically speaking, we have the cognitive ability to overcome that tendency and (gulp) evolve.

also, there is more to value than just dollars...value also comes in Common Sense.

rabsteen- glad you enjoyed the post. and thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to take a look at your suggestions. stop by again.

ShaeNC- replied to comment on the haloscan side.

whymrhymer- i suppose rich and/or famous would be helpful, but short of that, we can try to raise awareness levels of others and press for reform, or turn out a nasty sort of revolution. I'd prefer the former, really.

(Haloscan seems to be broke today!)

It looks like a brilliant plan but, being a pessimist whenever any governments are involved, I wonder how something like that can be brought from the drawing board into reality unless you're really rich and/or powerful.

Hurry up -- get rich and famous!

after enjoying this entry, i'd like to suggest 2 authors. first Jane Jacobs, her last three books were fantastic, and quite relevant to how we conceptualize the modern city.

secondly, a very interesting take on globalization is by an author called Immanuel Wallerstein. If it's your first time, I'd suggest starting with a book called Utopistics.

great post.

Oddly enough, I was listenting to NPR today and there was this guy on Terry Gross talking about his book, "Rats."
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4571639

Anyway, the quote that is relavent here is something like this - paraphrasing:

Rats are like humans, we are both very good at settling in and eating up all our natural resources.

Well, we are long over due for a rethinking of city and urban planning, and insertion of green space can only increase rather than decrease property values. I wonder what the reichwingers will object to on your thinking here.
