Unfortunately the politicians are after votes not trust and they will back stab anyone who gets in their way.

My friend said, “The quickest way to ruin a good man is through politics.”

First, it’s good to hear some fresh voices after the long vacation, as well as from my more regular commenters. Thanks to all for dropping by.

2Boysandtoys- Thanks for the comment. Yes, times do change, and they should. Sadly though, things like trust and honor have been dropped into the wastebin in our haste to “advance.” These virtues are not things to be shed like a worn shirt, they are what makes it possible for us to live as communities, to progress as cultures. We must insist upon their return to the public sphere.

jay- glad you like the links. please feel free to click away and support some good causes, read some good thoughts, or selflessly add pennies to my Adsense account. Hope you drop by again.

Jet- You certainly make a good point, and perhaps it is my hope that humanity not only expects honesty but is willing to ensure they get it. Sadly, most people simply give up and succomn to apathy instead of realizing that the power really is in their hands, if the’d only unclench them for a little while. Hope all is well for you.

GTL- More open debates, less corporate money, abolition of the parties completely…all good steps towards a more responsible government. Thanks for dropping by. Blog on my friend!

Windspike- Good to be back. Thanks. I agree with you that trust can quicklly be broken, but the initial act of trust sometimes comes froma default position. It grows (or evaporates) with time, but it starts almost from the beginning of meeting a person.

Trust in politics is so broken, I don’t know where to begin. You are right about the cynical promises. It is just one link in the rusty chain of deceit.

And yes, trust requires an ability to dissent with the majority view without fear of reprisal.

Zataod- You grasped something I left out, the necessity of a free, unbiased press. Our corporate dominated information society is only condensing the days events and histrorical past into easily swallowable bits that bear their seal of approval. Often whatever will advance their own agenda (read: make them more money) is what gets sent out as news. I touched on this topic a while back in an essay called “The (New) Fourth Estate.” You can find it in the archives. Thanks for the comment.

Justadog-If our politicians lack these qualities it is due to the dual nature of having to cozy up to corporations to fund a campaign while having to try and please all the constituents all the time. It is indicative of our own selfish nature and entitlement society. We expect to always get what we want and have a hard time taking no for an answer. So our politicians tell us what we want to hear while doing what their donors want them to do. The cynical cycle continues to grow.

Michael- Thanks for the hat tip. Blogazoo members- here’s your Gazoo!

Trust for a Senator (for example) would be his/her committment to the country, a committment that would not jeperdize the reputation and image of the country for the purpose of making his/her party look better, or a current administration look bad or evil.

Sort of like having a friend. Would you defame and insult and create all manner of lies and deception against someone you claim to be friends with just to make yourself look good? Concepts such as trust, honor, allegiance are and have been chopped away – not many remain that have such qualities in the public eye.

As it stands now, our news media is another form of entertainment and has neglected its former duty of keeping the citizens informed.

We may have to build a new (non-corporate dominated) free press to replace the one that is no longer serving the purposes that are required for a democracy to exist.

I have posted a bit about the notion and tenet of trust over on my location, but the thrust of my perspective is that trust takes a lifetime to earn and a moment to break.

The trouble with politicians and trust is the way campaigns are run – built on untenable platforms and spoiled by broken promises that shouldn’t have been made in the first place.

Many blogs are exactly as you call it:
“Yet as citizens, we are not much better. We ignore elections in droves, apathetically assuming that nothing can change. We dissect every aspect of a candidate’s life whether it has relevance to the desired office or not. We live for the scandal. We drink up the distractions. We feed the flames.”

Unfortunately, when “faith” becomes a surrogate for trust, a preson has taken the dive off the high platform into the deep end of the “blind” followership pool. And it becomes difficult to trust anyone affiliated with the top end that demands such loyalty.

When those close to you say nothing but nice, fuzzy things and yes to your every whim, you know it is time to get a new crew.

We must support meaningful election reform (to be discussed later) and encourage more candidates to run for office.”

Agreed, Ken. One thing we can do to take our Government back from big biz and special interests would be to INSIST election debates include minority parties. The two-party system we’ve been given by the MSM is a huge lie, and it serves Government ONLY, and not it’s People. The best (recent) election campaigns I’ve seen were the recent California Governor’s debate and the Presidential race where Ross Perot was allowed to express his points of view.

In order to accomplish what you, I, and many other Americans want, this is a *MUST*! Without a true voice in our Government, We, The People are doomed to serve It as opposed to how it should be; the other way around.

Great post, and welcome back from your vacation, my friend.

As long as the climate is conducive to behaviors like refusing to release documents, public changing of stories without recrimination and acceptance of outright lies, trust cannot win. Frankly, if you’re the one lying, dissembling, and concealing, the loss of trust is no great punishment. You have to care to be hurt by the loss of trust.
