The left’s win is not a mandate for getting a liberal agenda pushed through, but I think it is a plea for changes in our country’s politics. I think the voters were tired of the Karl Rove “divide and conquer” way of doing things. I also believe responsibility and accountability were on the minds of voters, enough so that while America may not need impeachment hearings, Iraq oversight hearings led by an independent counsel might be acceptable and useful to help us learn to not get into bad straits again (as I feel we currently are in Iraq…)

I don’t think the elections were a general referendum on the “religious right”, because large numbers of them still came out to vote. However, I think the election results should send a signal to the evangelical leaders that the harder they push for oppressive or restrictive legislation, the harder the rest of us will push back. Those political views are still not in the majority in the U.S., for the most part. The evangelical vote makes GOP wins possible, and without those voters the GOP would be in sorry shape. Nonetheless, the views of the fundamentalists are the minority view, and the leaders of that movement need to realize this, that is, that trying to legislate their morality on the rest of us is probably not going to fly (at least I hope it never flies!)

The Dems DO need to get workin’. The next two years won’t be easy, and the next couple of months may be especially tough, as the right wingers try to pass as much bad legistlation as they can while they still have complete control in D.C.!

Like you say, “Tomorrow the work can begin.” And we have no time to dilly dally. The Democrats must get crackin’ as soon as possible.

My only disappointment in this hazy afterglow of triumph is that you’re not one of those headed to Washington to reclaim our floundering nation. I’m crossing my fingers that you’ll give it another go in ’08.

Best wishes!

Welcome back America!
