(response)

Gindy- The "inability of the government" implies not that the capability does not exist, only that the will does not exist. Either way though, if they do not do their job, it becomes an "inability."
Thanks for the comment.

Great post and important topic. But, here is where I disagree with you:

"But the inability of the government to eliminate illegal immigration"

The Minutemen proved it wasn't inability. They got a couple hundred untrained guys out there and their impact was enormous. I think this shows that the government has been letting this problem continue.

I agree with yor 100% about how Big Business helps faclitate illeagl immigration. They with help of our government go to poor countries and install friendly regimes, usally brutal dictators trained in the states, and push the poor of the lands and then tell them to go to America.

They keep the wage base low break up unions and kill disenters. It is sick. I love your sight and will put a link to it on mine. Keep it up.

(response)

M+ - while it is true that America has become addicted to cheap products, there is no reason that manufactured goods can not remain inexpensive without the benefit of illegal immigration. In fact, if our government would pressure other nations to do better by their own citizens, many of the jobs done here could be done there too, creating employment, raising the standard of living, and keeping people in their home countries. Americans would still enjoy cheap goods as the global economy becomes more intertwined aand they would have jobs at home too.

(response)

SheaNC- You are correct in what you say regarding enforcement of the employers. This is the very least that our government could be doing right now and every citizen should be behind the effort to uphold the law.

It seems that a concerted effort between government and business has created an environment that induces illegal immigration and the attitude is so widespread that average citizens tacitly support this doublespeak even as they condemn it.

Another example of our duplicity thank lowers our reputation throughout the citizens of the world.

This is definitely one of your best essays to date. Probably because I find myself in wholehearted agreement with you. And sheanc's comments are also on target, from my perspective.
But we're also missing one other aspect of this discussion. The fact that the cheap labor affords so many Americans the low-priced items that such labor produces. And we have become dreadfully used to such low-priced goods that it may become very difficult to convince others that we all need to rethink the true value of the labor. Especially when it may concern our national security.

As a border-state resident (AZ,CA) I have engaged in a few discussions about this, and a rousing one in another blog a while back. The one thing that is barely mentioned, if ever, is the role of american business owners and private citizens in this situation. The vast majority of illegals come here to work. However, the word "illegal" is always applied to the immigrants, but never the people who hire them, who are also breaking the law. No taxes, no OSHA, no benefits, no unemployment insurance, no health insurance, no accountability. They hire them for mor than agriculture. They hire them as landscapers, maids, construction workers, all kinds of things. Supply and demand makes this a two-way street. If Americans really want to make a dent in illegal immigration, start prosecuting those who hire them.

In my opinion, the Americans who provide employment for illegal immigrants are more guilty than the immigrants themselves. This is because, while the immigrants themselves are usually deperate workers scrambling to survive, the Americans who hire them are not desperate; they are fully aware that they are breaking the law and deliberately doing so. They should be arrested and prosecuted - then you would see some results!
