re: quote from your post - If you’ve ever read an actual bill that is headed to the floor for a vote, the first thing to stand out is the extraordinary length and legalese that makes legislation nearly impossible to digest. - end quote -

In the book, Gullivers Travels, one of the lands Gulliver travels to is ruled by horses. These horses have an alphabet of 22 letters. They also have a law that "no law can contain more words than there are letters of the alphabet." (only 13 words - see how easy it is!)

If only we could get congress to pass such a law here...

(responses)

Shea- I share your disappointment. It's as if they've given up hope as well as courage. We do need to address the apathy among us, and I hope that some independent voices will rise to the challenge. Thanks as always for participating in the discussion.

eV- Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Well, I gotta add that I am so disappointed with the democrats lately, I think reform has got to address the big two parties and what to do about 'em. Americans have tolerated these scoundrels for long enough (maybe because we are such a rich and comfortable country that apathy prevails). We need change!

(responses)

Me4- Of course they aren't going to police themselves. We do need to replace a whole lot of them at once to make a change and show the rest who remain that the bs has to stop. Thanks for the comments friend.

KWW- Thanks- I'll let you know when to support a campaign. In the meantime, you're right. The so-called reform efforts being trotted out are little or nothing in the final analysis. They don't want to change because to do so would be to get thrown out of office. They are careerists first and public servants far later. I'm glad I could shed some light on the way things are and offer some ideas on how they can be changed. Good to hear from you as always.

I agree with Liam...we should send you to Washington. I also think that the frantic rush to reform is for show. Too many who sit in those chambers like things just they way they are.

I learned a lot I didn't know about how things are done in D.C. by reading this post!

Twenty-five or thirty years ago Congress did one of its sneaky midnight sessions just before leaving for vacation. According to the press, the sole purpose for this session in the wee hours of the night, was to raise their own salaries. The press made a real stink about it. Congress justified its actions by claiming that the extra $$$$ was necessary as a deterrent to keep the impoverished elected officials from accepting large sums of money in bribes. At the time, I thought, if they are so easily tempted and dishonest enough to accept bribes, they should not be in Congress in the first place - let alone be getting raises!

Reform would be nice, but I don't know if it will matter unless we replace a lot of the people representing us. Are they going to police themselves? Isn't that how all this has happened anyway? Bob got a t-shirt so I should be able to go to Amsterdam for dinner.
